A Living Symbol of Remembrance: To Mark the Day of Remembrance for Fallen Healthcare Workers, ZDOROVI Planted a Fir Tree at the National Botanical Garden
In memory of the healthcare workers whose lives were taken by the war, the ZDOROVI team planted a living symbol of remembrance. In a unique corner of the M. M. Hryshko National Botanical Garden in Kyiv — home to Ukraine's only rhododendron garden — we planted a Korean fir as a tribute to the strength of those who chose to save others even in the darkest of times.
Today, Ukrainian healthcare workers save lives despite exhaustion, burnout, and the chronic underfunding of the healthcare system. At the same time, they often put their own health — and even their lives — at risk.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of May 8, 2026, healthcare facilities and medical teams in Ukraine had endured more than 3,000 attacks since the start of the full-scale invasion. Nearly one in five attacks on the healthcare system targeted ambulances and other medical transport, while one in three such incidents resulted in casualties.
Since the beginning of 2026 alone, healthcare facilities have come under attack 186 times, claiming the lives of 15 healthcare workers and injuring at least 81 others.
Today, healthcare is one of the most dangerous professions in Ukraine. Yet despite the constant threat and extraordinarily challenging working conditions, doctors, nurses, clinical support staff, paramedics, and other healthcare professionals continue to care for patients and save lives every day.
For many years, ZDOROVI has been supporting Ukraine's healthcare system. Caring for healthcare professionals and strengthening healthcare facilities have always been key priorities for us. We procure medical equipment and medicines, help healthcare workers prevent burnout and communicate effectively with patients, and organize internships, continuing education programs, and professional events. Above all, we have learned to see growth opportunities where many others see only despair.
That is why, on the Day of Remembrance for Fallen Healthcare Workers, we choose to speak not only about loss, grief, and tears, but also about hope.
In memory of the medical workers whose lives were taken by the war, the ZDOROVI team planted a living symbol of remembrance. In a unique corner of the M. M. Hryshko National Botanical Garden in Kyiv — home to Ukraine's only rhododendron garden — we planted a Korean fir (Abies koreana) that will grow stronger with each passing year, preserving the memory of those who devoted their lives to saving others until their very last breath.
We chose the Korean fir with intention. In many cultures, it symbolizes life, health, resilience, and healing. For us, it also represents resilience — a reminder that life endures despite loss, and that memory never fades. Evergreen throughout the seasons, the tree will stand as a tribute to the strength of those who chose to save others even in the darkest of times, and as a symbol of our shared hope that Ukraine will prevail and that dawn will always follow the darkest night.
This tree will grow alongside new generations of Ukrainians, reminding us that remembrance is not only about honoring the past. It is also about our shared responsibility to support those who, even today, continue to risk their own lives to save the lives of others.
