Almost 1,000 Medical Professionals in Ukraine Received Mental Health Support from ZDOROVI and Americares
Doctors can diagnose illnesses based on their patients’ symptoms. But the war has exposed another problem: even healthcare workers do not always recognize their own exhaustion in time. That is why one of the most telling outcomes of the Stronger Together project, implemented by ZDOROVI and Americares from January to May 2026, was not only the number of activities conducted, but also the fact that nearly a thousand people working in the healthcare system agreed to talk about their own exhaustion.
Over the course of five months, 990 healthcare workers and managers from 12 healthcare facilities in the Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Poltava, and Odesa regions joined the project. For them, 60 group psychological support sessions were organized, providing an opportunity to earn continuing professional development credits, along with 180 individual consultations.
Just a few years ago, such results might have seemed unlikely. In the medical community, the topic of psychological support had long remained on the sidelines. Today, however, an increasing number of professionals recognize that professional burnout, chronic stress, and emotional exhaustion do not go away on their own and require just as much attention as physical health.
The results of participant evaluations confirm this trend. After completing the program, healthcare professionals reported improvements in their emotional well-being, reduced stress levels, the development of self-regulation skills, and a better understanding of the signs of professional burnout. They also reported greater confidence in interacting with patients and colleagues in crises.

It is particularly important that the program included not only doctors and nurses but also 202 healthcare facility executives. Management decisions often determine whether caring for employees’ psychological well-being becomes an integral part of organizational culture rather than a temporary response to a crisis.
For ZDOROVI, this initiative is part of a systematic effort. Stronger Together is already the second psychological support project for healthcare workers implemented in partnership with Americares and the third such project in the organization’s history. In total, more than 3,300 healthcare workers have received psychological support through these programs, and the number of events held has exceeded 1,350.
ZDOROVI is grateful to Americares for its consistent support of this initiative and for a partnership that helps not only address the effects of burnout but also foster a culture of caring for the people who look after others’ health every day.
Today, the Ukrainian healthcare system is being tested not only in terms of its professionalism but also its human resilience. While resilience was once measured by the availability of equipment and medicines, the war has reminded us of another important truth: a strong healthcare system begins with people who have the capacity to care for others.
