Barrier-free hospitals is essential to ensuring healthcare systems are inclusive, equitable, and aligned with global standards. In Ukraine, where the legacy of Soviet-era inaccessibility still lingers, this transformation is more than overdue. While this issue may feel distant to those unfamiliar with the region’s history, it carries profound implications for millions of Ukrainians, especially those with disabilities.

During the Soviet era, individuals with disabilities were often hidden from public life due to a lack of accessible infrastructure. Medical facilities, public spaces, and transportation systems were not designed to accommodate them, leaving many effectively confined to their homes. Unfortunately, some of this outdated infrastructure and attitude remains in Ukraine today, limiting access to healthcare for vulnerable populations.

The urgency of addressing this issue has never been greater. Ukraine’s population includes a growing number of people with mobility challenges—whether due to age, chronic illness, or the consequences of injuries. Yet, many hospitals in Ukraine lack basic accessibility features like ramps, elevators, or adapted examination rooms. 

By making healthcare barrier-free, Ukraine is not only improving the quality of life for its citizens but also demonstrating its commitment to international values of inclusion and equity. This is a crucial step in the nation’s alignment with European standards, where accessibility is considered a fundamental right.

A Path Forward  

ZDOROVI, the biggest Ukrainian NGO for targeted aid to hospitals, has launched a training program for healthcare leaders, “Barrier-free healthcare”, which provides practical tools to drive this transformation. A key component of the course includes a comprehensive checklist for creating barrier-free hospitals.

This checklist guides hospitals in:  

- Building accessible infrastructure, such as ramps, elevators, and wider doorways.  

- Providing personalized assistance to patients with disabilities.  

- Training healthcare workers to offer inclusive and empathetic care.  

These improvements not only remove physical barriers but also foster dignity and independence for people with disabilities, allowing them to seek healthcare without fear or inconvenience.
