What are the main problems of Ukrainian medicine in the first quarter of 2025?
Challenges that only the new stage of the author's study of medicine "Barometer" will reveal
We have collected unique information about the key problems of Ukrainian medicine in the first quarter of 2025. The answers to the questions of our author's study "Barometer" were provided by 132 managers of medical institutions across the country.
The purpose of the study is to assess the dynamics of changes in the industry, the level of security, the mental state of the staff, safety, inclusiveness and the quality of interaction with stakeholders.
The main conclusions of the study:
- Staff shortage and psychological exhaustion: a systemic personnel crisis. About 91% of heads of institutions recognize an acute shortage of doctors, especially rehabilitation specialists, anesthesiologists and psychologists.
- Growing attention to the mental health of staff. Despite the presence of full-time psychologists, in 23% of institutions employees do not turn to them. The reasons are fear of judgment, belief in their own ability to cope independently, doubts about confidentiality.
- The need for specialized training for staff — in particular, on communication with cancer patients and patients with injuries resulting from military agression.
- Lack of funding. This was reported by 72% of respondents, half of whom spoke of a critical shortage for repairs, equipment purchases, and salaries.
- Insufficient level of inclusivity. 72% of medical facility managers noted that their institutions need to improve the accessibility of services.
The Barometer study, launched by ZDOROVI in 2023, is a way to regularly monitor the healthcare system in wartime. The findings of the seventh wave of the study emphasize that medicine requires coordinated intersectoral support — both financial and expert. Only the synergy of the state, civil society, international partners, and doctors themselves will allow transforming the crisis into a point of growth.
